Spotify is introducing new parental controls to protect young listeners under the age of 13. This new feature, called “managed accounts”, lets parents and guardians manage their child’s Spotify experience on their own account. By enabling this feature, parents can restrict their child’s access to certain types of music, videos, and artwork that may not be suitable for their age group. For example, they can block explicit content or decide which artists or tracks their child can listen to.
This feature is part of a pilot program available to parents or guardians on a Family plan in certain countries, including Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden. Parents who share an account with their kids may also be prompted to switch to a Family plan, which will give each member their own personalized recommendations and keep their musical tastes separate.
Spotify’s decision to introduce parental controls comes in response to growing pressure from regulators to keep kids safe online. Other popular apps, such as TikTok, Meta, Snap, and YouTube, have also introduced similar features to give parents more control over their kids’ online activities.
The new feature is available under the Accounts page in the Spotify app, where parents can select the option to “Add a listener aged under 13” and follow the instructions to set up the controls. This will help parents choose the right music for their young listeners and ensure they have a safe and enjoyable experience on Spotify.
