Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, trains AI models using the content posted on its platforms. This might not be a surprise, but it’s been confirmed by Meta’s global privacy director, Melinda Claybaugh.
Claybaugh recently answered questions from Australian lawmakers during an inquiry. When asked about what Meta does with user content, she confirmed that the company has been scraping all public posts on Instagram and Facebook since 2007, unless the user made their post private.
This means that many of the photos, videos, and messages you’ve posted on Facebook and Instagram over the years have likely been used to train AI models. But what about private posts or content that was removed from the platforms? According to Claybaugh, those types of content are excluded from being scraped.
However, it’s important to note that the rules around what content is used for AI training might vary depending on where you live. In today’s TechCrunch Minute, we’re discussing what’s been scraped, what’s been excluded, and how these differences might affect you as a user.
