Shihab Mehboob, a developer, has created a new social media app called Saturn. He previously developed Mammoth, a popular Mastodon client, which he later sold. Mehboob wanted to create a new app that would compete with Mastodon and provide a unique feature that summarizes the user’s timeline.
This feature, called “Highlights,” doesn’t use artificial intelligence or machine learning to show popular content. Instead, it uses a simple algorithm to find the most liked and reposted posts from the user’s timeline and shows them at the top.
Saturn also includes other features like image and video posting, GIFs, polls, and more. Unlike other social media apps, Saturn displays a chronological timeline, without any algorithmic curating.
The app allows users to customize their navigation bar and includes a premium subscription option. For $12.99 per year or $39.99 one-time purchase, users can access additional features like a lurker mode, speed dial, and more.
Saturn is available for free download on iOS devices and offers in-app purchases. It has been more than a year since Mehboob sold Mammoth, and he is now focusing on his new app.
“I think the biggest draw with Saturn is its beautiful interface, customization, and smoothness,” Mehboob says. “It feels at home on iOS.”
