Uber Partners with Waymo to Launch Self-Driving Robotaxis in Austin and Atlanta Soon

Uber users in Austin and Atlanta will soon be able to order ride-hailing services from Waymo, which will be available through the Uber app in early 2025. This is part of a new partnership between Uber and Waymo.

Waymo has already begun offering its self-driving taxis on the Uber app in Phoenix since October 2023. Uber is also partnering with other companies like GM’s Cruise and Wayve to expand its self-driving services.

Waymo currently operates its own self-driving taxi service, called Waymo One, in several cities including San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, providing around 100,000 trips per week. The company has been testing its robotaxis in Atlanta and Austin, and will soon make its services available to Uber users in these cities.

Initially, only a limited number of users will be able to order Waymo rides in Austin and Atlanta through the Waymo One app. However, Waymo plans to expand its fleet of Jaguar I-PACE autonomous vehicles to “hundreds” over time. Uber will be responsible for managing the fleet, while Waymo will handle the testing and operation of its self-driving technology.

Waymo will continue to operate its own self-driving taxi service, Waymo One, in its existing markets, and may also consider partnering with other companies to expand its services to new areas.
